Scale insects are very different from most insect pests. This type of activity, known as “Gloomy Scale”, mostly attacks maple trees. These insects live under a hard shell, with no visible legs or wings. Scales feed on plant sap, and slowly cause decline to the tree. Over time, these gloomy scales multiply, and cover the tree’s trunk and branches. This activity reduces the ability for the tree to push growth. In the above photos, this tree has been so overcome by scale that removal is the only option. If caught in time, Shrub Doctor can successfully eliminate gloomy scale activity in your trees. We use organic horticultural oils to suffocate the scale. In cases of more advanced scale activity, we introduce systemic products to the base of the tree, which quickly kills the scale as it feeds on the tree’s sugary sap. Call Shrub Doctor if you have similar conditions to your trees. We will gladly visit your property and give you a free evaluation of your tree’s condition.
