Seiridium Canker disease usually attacks Leyland Cypress trees. One will first notice dead limbs throughout the tree, and possible sap oozing from its limbs and trunk. This disease is caused by “seiridium unicorne” fungal spores. These airborne spores settle on the tree, and invade through cracks or wounds in the bark. The canker restricts vascular movement beyond its infected area, causing the limb to die. Notice an example in the photo. The photos also show an example of sap oozing from the canker infection. Best practice is to prune out the dead foliage, about two inches below the infection. Next boost the tree’s health with a good organic nutrient package via deep root injection or basal drench. Leylands need to be well hydrated. Diseases of leylands usually begin during times of drought, and weakness due to poor soil conditions, or poor placement. Most websites give no long-term solution for seiridium canker disease. Shrub Doctor has had very good success with a blended copper solution that is specially made for our customers. This recipe is first applied via a basal drench, followed by a foliar application using our fogging machine, or hose spray. A second application of copper may be necessary, along with pruning or possible removal of other trees, to assure the Leyland Cypress receives good sunlight and airflow. Seiridium Canker doesn’t have to be a death sentence to your trees. Call or email Shrub Doctor with questions about your Leylands. We will be glad to help find a solution to your tree’s problem.
