A small tree removal company in Charlotte stopped one of our arborists to diagnose the strange white spots on the tree of their customer. The customer had lost other trees on the property to the same issue that is displayed in this photo. This tree is being attacked by a fungal disease called Hypoxylon Canker. Many hardwood trees in the south are susceptible to this disease, but Shrub Doctor mostly finds this condition in our oak species. We usually see this pathogen attacking weak or distressed trees. Often times it may be isolated to a limb that’s beginning to die. In this case the limbs can be cut away and removed from the property. If these cankers are found on the trunk of the tree the best practice would be to remove it from the landscape. The best proactive approach is to keep your trees healthy and free of stresses due to drought, construction repairs, and other disruptions to the tree’s environment. If you suspect your tree is being attacked by hypoxylon canker give Shrub Doctor a call. One of our ISA certified arborists will gladly inspect your trees to determine if you have this issue. Shrub Doctor also provides solutions to keep your trees healthy and strong so your trees can withstand the constant onslaught of disease and insect infestation.
