A few months ago, Shrub Doctor was asked to help with scale infestation within an old property in the Myers Park neighborhood. The landscape is full of very old camellia shrubs. Some of these shrubs are over 10 feet tall. Due to years of neglect, and overcrowding , the camellias were covered with scale activity. Shrub Doctor immediately went to work treating the camellias with a horticultural oil solution to suffocate the scale. As of this date, most of the scale has been eliminated. Unfortunately, the neighboring properties are also covered with scale, so Shrub Doctor will have a challenge going forward to keep this issue in control.
Note the white and black specks to the undersides of the foliage. The black is the dead scale, suffocated by the earlier oil treatments. The white is “active” scale activity. In the above photo you will see how the foliage appears to look from the front of the leaf. If you notice this condition on your camellias, give Shrub Doctor a call. We will come out and access the situation free of charge.
