The weight of snow and ice can cause severe damage to your shrubs. We are currently experiencing a bad snow storm, and are expected to have ice on the way. I have two english boxwoods that are over 50 years old. Past snows have broken limbs, and done damage to the crown of the plant. My azaleas have also experienced broken limbs. Yesterday, I looked around my garage, and found items that I could use to protect them from today’s snow. I used binders twine, and tied my azaleas up so that the limbs would not break under the weight of the snow. For my large boxwood, I used three lawn tools to make a pyramid over the shrub. I tied them at the top so they would not fall. I covered the plant with a tarp, to keep off the snow. I used beach chairs to protect my smaller boxwoods, and covered the top with lids from storage bins. I know… it looks funny…but it works.
