Shrub Doctor noticed this damage to the azaleas when entering the Sherrills Ford, NC post office. These plants have been neglected for several seasons, and have become weak from the heat and lack of proper nutrition. Due to their weakness, Lace Bugs have attacked the plants, and sucked the chlorophyl from the foliage. You will notice the yellowish condition of the azalea leaves. The lace bugs have drained the sap from these leaves one cell at a time. Azaleas planted in areas of excessive sun exposure are more prone to lace bug damage. Azaleas thrive best in semi-shaded areas, such as under the canopies of larger shade trees, or in areas that do not receive hot afternoon sun.
